Knife Gate Valves for Demanding Media

Knife gate valve is a type of gate valve specifically designed for media containing solids, fibres, or high-viscosity materials that would clog or jam a standard gate valve. The gate has a sharpened lower edge that cuts through fibrous and solid-laden media as it closes, preventing buildup and ensuring a reliable seal. The thin, flat gate profile gives the valve a very short face-to-face length, making it more compact than a conventional gate valve of the same bore size.

Knife-Edge Precision

As the gate slides through the media on each open and close cycle, it wipes accumulated material from the seat surfaces, helping to maintain sealing performance over time without requiring manual cleaning.

Full-Bore, Zero Drag

When fully open, the gate retracts completely out of the flow path, leaving a straight-through bore with no internal restrictions. This minimises pressure drop and reduces the risk of solids settling inside the valve body.

When to choose a knife gate valve over a standard gate valve
A standard gate valve works well for clean fluids such as water, oil, and gas. If the media contains suspended solids, fibres, pulp, or other materials that could lodge between a standard gate and its seat, a knife gate valve is the appropriate choice. The cutting edge and simplified seat geometry are specifically designed to handle these conditions.

Body material selection
WCB carbon steel is the standard choice for general wastewater, slurry, and mining applications. Stainless steel (SS304 or SS316) is specified where corrosion resistance is required, such as chemical slurries, acidic wastewater, or food-grade applications. For specific media enquiries, contact us with the fluid composition and operating conditions.

Pressure and temperature considerations
Knife gate valves are suited to low to moderate pressure applications. They are not recommended as a substitute for standard gate valves in high-pressure clean fluid service. If your application involves elevated pressure or temperature, contact us to confirm the valve is appropriate for your conditions.
